How to Choose a Wedding Hair and Makeup Artist in Seattle — What to Ask Before You Book
You've narrowed it down. Maybe you have two artists you love. Portfolios are beautiful. Pricing is comparable. And now you're stuck — because how do you actually choose?
This is one of the most common places brides get frozen, and it's exactly what I cover in a recent episode of the Beyond Bridal podcast. Because choosing your bridal beauty team isn't just about the look. It's about your entire wedding morning.
Here's what actually matters — and what to ask before you sign anything.
Start With Communication, Not Just the Portfolio
The portfolio got you in the door. But the first email exchange tells you everything. How quickly did they respond? Was the message clear and warm, or vague and transactional? Did they ask about your vision, your venue, your wedding party — or did they just send a price list?
An experienced artist leads with questions. They want to understand you before they quote you. That's not just good customer service — it's how a team that shows up calm and prepared operates.
If you're waiting three days for a response during the inquiry phase, imagine what day-of communication looks like.
Ask These Questions at Your Trial
The trial is not just about seeing the look. It's an interview. Use it.
"How do you structure a wedding morning timeline?" This question separates experienced teams from everyone else. A seasoned artist doesn't just show up and start. They build a timeline that accounts for your party size, your start time, your venue distance, and the unexpected. If they can't speak to this fluently, that's information.
"What happens if something goes wrong on the day?" A kit malfunction. An allergic reaction. A late arrival. How does the team handle it? The answer should be calm, specific, and confident. Not "oh that never happens."
"Who exactly will be doing my hair and makeup?" If you're booking a team, you need to know which artist is assigned to you, what their experience level is, and whether you'll meet them before the wedding day. This matters.
"Have you worked at my venue before?" Venue experience isn't required, ( it should be )but it's a legitimate question. An artist who has worked at the Four Seasons Seattle, the Fairmont Olympic, or Roche Harbor before knows what the light looks like, where to set up, and what the timeline typically demands.
The Calm Factor Is Everything
This is what I talk about in the Beyond Bridal episode on choosing between two teams — and it's the thing most brides don't think to evaluate until it's too late.
On your wedding morning, so much is happening that you never fully see. And that's by design. A great beauty team creates calm. They don't add to the noise. They don't rush visibly, stress loudly, or let the energy of the room become chaotic.
When you're at your trial, notice how you feel. Do you feel heard? Do you feel like they're running the experience with intention? Or do you feel like you're managing them?
Your getting-ready morning sets the emotional tone for your entire wedding day. The team in that room matters more than most brides realize until it's over.
When Portfolios Are Equal, Go Deeper
If you've landed between two artists and everything looks comparable on paper, here's what to weigh:
Team structure. Is it a solo artist or a full team? For larger wedding parties, a team with a clear lead and supporting artists is essential for staying on timeline.
Press and recognition. Has the artist been featured? Awards and editorial credits aren't vanity — they signal that other professionals in the industry trust and recognize this work. Washington Wedding Day Best of 2025. People Magazine. Style Me Pretty. These aren't accidental.
How they handle the hard questions. Ask about cancellation policy. Ask about what happens if the lead artist is ill. How a business handles its contracts tells you how it handles everything.
Your gut. After twenty years in this industry, I'll tell you — it almost always comes down to this. The artist who asks better questions, communicates more clearly, and makes you feel the most seen is almost always the right choice.
